Hey There!

I'm wondering what is the best book you've read.  What book has inspired you to change you're life or do something extraordinary?  Well if you love books, why don't you come join us on March 28 @ 4pm and share the books you have loved.  This is an event the world has never seen before, in 6o locations around the world at 4pm local time people are gathering to Share The Book with people they have never meet and we want you to come be involved.
All you need to bring is a copy of the book you think could inspire some else to go something great in their lives.  If you loved the book chances are the person you give the book too will love it too! I am wondering what sorts of books people will be parting with on Wednesday 28th March.  If you're thinking of stroll along download the flyer and pop it inside the book. The flyer explains a bit about the event and the Pay It Forward Experience and why the person is receiving this unexpected gift.
I'll be meeting up with
you guys in Ipswich at our
local Cafe for coffee!
As members of the Pay It Forward Movement we believe that a little kindness in somebody's life each day can help transform people's lives.  Instead of waiting for that person to repay us as individuals we as them to pay it forward.  I don't know if you've every read the book or see the movie, but I  had the chance to steal some time last week to read the book, and be inspired all over again.  If you read the book you'll know just how unpredictable who and how thing will be pay forward.
On March 28 we won't be making a big announcement about the fact were sharing books, rather  we're hoping to catch people off guard and before they know it this unexpected event is unfolding before their eyes and you walk up and hand them your book and ask them to pay it forward someday, only to disappear back into the crowd with out a trace. Never knowing the influence you will have on some else's life.  If you'd think you'd like to be involved then check out our events facebook page .  We hope to see you there.

Something to hang on your door

After you have
Shared The Book
On March 28
Here's something
From Penguin Books
You might like to
Hang on your door!

Did you know?

That March 22
is WORLD WATER DAY!
ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER
IS A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT!

Access to clean water and yet millions of people drink contaminated water every day. One might  suspect this is due to environmental factors such as drought or poor infer-structure in the third world, but this is only half the story.  We do have the ability to help develop clean water solutions in the most basic living conditions around the world.  Be also can bottle water for cooking and drinking, and supply equipment to clean contained water.

The main problem is not about the means and technology to provide clean water.  Unlike food supply, which is much more dependant on the environment, soil conditions and lack of best farming techiqunices and transfer of skills. Access to clean water in a lot of cases is about greed and control of ruling parties and corruption of Governments. In many countries where civil and tribal wars are occurring each day women and child put their lives at risk simply by going to collect their daily water needs even though in many cases the water is still contaminated even after boiling.  Often women and young girls are raped as they water kilometres to collect water each day.

Denying people safe access to even poor water quality water is a means of the warlords can bring suppression and oppression to the people.  It is also well document even in countries that are suppose to be democraticly run voting is often rigged and rebel armies deny access to polling booths.  The greed of a few denies access to water for the masses.Poverty in general is difficult to address because of corruption on a global scale.  This week Sevenly Tees pictured above is addressing the water needs of one village.  Their are other links to charities working toward clean water supply through out the world in our links section. Please help access to clean water in anyway you can this week,.

Vance Hyde 1922 - 2012 History Maker

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hyde family today.  As Vance, Catherine Ryan Hyde's mother passed away today.  As members of the PIF group we all feel a sense of lost to our Pay It Forward online community.

Catherine Ryan Hyde is the author of Pay It Forward the book.  Catherine was the first person inducted into the Pay It Forward Hall of Fame earlier this year for her contribution to the movement. Catherine never dreamed that her book would inspire a movement, simply by asking other people to pay forward acts of kindness.  I confess to only reading Catherine's book last week.  It was one of those books that leaves you inspired to leave the world behind a better place than when you arrived. And we can certainly say that Vance Hyde has done that.

As a fellow writing a sat in awe as the book Pay It Forward took me on the most unexpected journey, as though to plead with the reader to never lose hope in the compassion of other human beings.

April 26 2012 would of being Vance's 90th Birthday,  so it seems so fitting the PIF community has renamed Pay It Forward Day 2012 - Vance's Pay It Forward Day.

On April 26 we are inviting you to Pay It Forward to someone in honour of Vance's memory.
New Pay It Forward Day memorial cards will be designed and Posted to our downloads page in time to use on the 26 April.  Please be remember Catherine and her family in your thoughts prayers at this time.

Help Stop Bullying

It seems that anyone who is in someway different can be bullied. Today is International Day Against Bullying! Recently in the States a high school boy was bullied simply for wearing a PINK Shirt to school.  To support this boy and to stand up to this Bully, the students decided they all wear pink shirts to school. So  the bullies be the ones that stand out.  The teachers decided they would support the students, by this is very much a movement driven by students. When other school heard the students decided they wear pink shirts to school today to. Proving that it only takes one person to create change, regardless of their age.
The truth is bulling isn't about the person whose being bullied, but the bully trying to make themselves feel better about themselves. The fact that the students chose a guy in a pink shirt that day proves that. You can be too short, too tall, too fat, too thin, to smart, to dumb, black, white, Asian, wear glasses or hearing aids, have a disability or just wear a pink shirt.

If a bully  is looking for a target he or she isn't looking for a particular type of person, just anyone who I can feel superior to.  I wish I knew that as a child.  I was bullied for most of my school life because I had CP.  Although I didn't always see it that way.

At one stage I convinced myself it was because needed to wear different school shoes.  A bit like the boy in the pink shirt I guess.  Somehow I convinced my mum and my physiotherapists to let me wear normal school shoes.  Of course that didn't stop them for bulling me.  Looking back, I was trying invein to look just like them and that gave them the power th needed to reduced me to tears and hide out in the library. That lasted until I was in Senior when I stood up and challenged the bullies.  In effect I made a claim I was stronger than them.  At least on the inside.  The bullying stopped that day.  Of course bullying doesn't stop because you grow up. The bullies grow up too.  I have been bullied in different ways at different times during my adult life, because the person wanted to prove to themselves that thet were better than me of I needed them.  So let's all stand up to bullies today.     .

Also Supporting Children in Africa this week is

Banded Society is a Fashion clothing and accessory company in the states, who make fashion items by hand.  As individuals banding together, through fashion and style they embrace people from all walks of life, regardless of their religion, nationality, colour or social class. As a company they believe in making the world a better place. So they donate a percentage of their sales to charity. Believing by banding together we can change the world,

This click here to support this months charities

As you are aware Invisible Children has been overwhelmed by the support & donations they have received. There is no way to be able to supply these all by April 20 2012. As such some resourced are now available for free download from their website if you are holding a cover your town red event.  Meaning T-shirts and wristbands will not be available. But these Banded Societies are and you pursed will support Children in Africa affected by disease, drought, famine, war, child slavery, butyrate, and displacement.  The answer to the complex humanitarian crisis are never solved by one means.  Real world change takes team work.  Here's  chance to support a team approach to the problems facing Africa today. We have put links to all four charities so you can check to your sanctification that you money is going where it needed.

Who are the Invisible Children

The Invisible Children Organisation recently hit the spotlight with millions of people around the world watching the U-tube clip encouraging us to make KONY famous through there KONY 2012 campaign to find Joseph Kony and bring him to justice in 2012, by enlisting the help of 20 key celebrities and 12 key policy-makers in the US. A pretty clever marketing concept don't you think?

The group has since coped plenty of criticism in the traditional media, social networks, blogs and internet sites, for their practises and how the spend the money the raise and if their methods will even work.  A quick overview of their  website shows their main aim is to bring Joseph Kony and the LRA to the International Crime Court.

However their Programmes include Legacy Scholarship Programmes; Schools for schools; Amend, Livelihood; Community Protection programs, Defection, and Rehabilitation.

But what is there history and who are they really? ,The Invisible Children Organisation was foundered in 2004 by Jason Russell, Lauren Poole  and Bobby Bailey to specifically put an end to LRA operations in Uganda, since 2006. However, the LRA operations has since dissolved see our post from yesterday on the LRA. The group does continue to operate in small numbers in Democratic Republic of Congo; Central African Republic, and Southern Sudan.           icencey

With the intention to make a documentary called War in Durfur in 2003, the groups founders travel Africa. This war was centralised in the Durfur region of Sudan. It was mainly a civil war, between different tribes, the government of Sudan denies supporting any one rebel tribe. The Sudanese Government and the JEM called a truce in 2010.

After witnessing live gun fire on root to Uganda Jason Russell and his team discovered Joseph Kony and his LRA army. After this encounter the group decided to focus on this aspect of the civil war and produced a film called Invisible Children: A Rough Cult.

The film is about the civil war in Southern Uganda and depicts the adduction of children and their use as child soldiers by  Joseph Kony in his LRA Army.

Initially the film was only shown to friends and family, believe little was known about the LRA the group began showing the movie to high school students and churches in a mission to exposed what they had witness in Uganda. The began raising money for the cause through selling merchandise such as T-shirts and bracelets.

The 2005 Invisible Children DVD seems to have start along history of making documentaries for team. This means of creating public awareness seems to be their greatest strength.  In all the group has produced ten documentaries highlighting civil war and the huge epidemic of displacement in Africa.  Although the media and marketing group are based in the US they also have a team on the Uganda you can view the team and information on the projects on the ground in Uganda on their website

In 2007 Invisible Children organise an event called Displace Me, 67,000 Activist camped in cardboard box makeshift towns for the night to raise awareness of the displacement experience by the living in Uganda at the time. Since this time the group has continued it direct humanitarian aid in rebuilding lives and its public awareness campaigns, including its current Make Kony Visible 2012 which has received over 50,000 million hits to view in under a week.

As already highlighted this campaign has drawn criticism from the media, academics, other groups working in the area, and individuals.  Mostly widely the video itself is almost unverseable criticised for its over simplification of a complex and highly violable situation. There is some debate as to how helpful the campaign is on the ground in Uganda and Sudan and whether drawing attention about the deployment of US troops has been harmful.  The other major criticism is how the group uses its donations.  In view their administration team it does appear that the organisation is possibility over staffed in terms of administration.  However the full finical statements are now available on their website and this is far beyond my level of expertise.

As individuals involved in world change we all have our own values and beliefs on how our charity dollars should be spent.  We have a right to know and therefore chose how our money helps change the world and we need to be diligent in when and how we support causes, because rest assure there be a new cause next week and the week after.  In the aftermath of the events of last week, I think we all need to step back and research a organisation before supporting it and being drag into something by our heart strings, if a cause is worth supporting it will be there for the lone term.

Having said that I applaud the Invisible Children for following their convictions and keeping the pressure on the US government.  Many would of said the troops are on the ground and called it a day. As April 20 2012 approaches we ask you keep the dialogue alive.  Whether you support the KONY 2012 campaign is your choice.

We hope our exploration of Joseph Kony, the Lord's Resistance Army and the Invisible Children over the last few days has been helpful and we encourage you to keep read and increase your knowledge of these.

Thank you,
The Director

Who is LRA anyway?

Let's Explore the Facts Closer

Before we take up our weapons, whether they be pens, notebooks, video cameras, facebook, wristbands, t-shirts or traditional weapons of war - guns and bullets is search of a hard core charismatic militant leader with 30 years of jungle  fighting, lets explore the facts a bit closer.  Because unlike the KONY 2012 U-Tub clip the capturing Joseph Kony is not "child's play.

Today, let us go back and look at Africa, it's political history, the religious and political figure of Joseph Kony, follow the footsteps of the LRA, its growth and demise, what has been tired and why it has failed.  Today's post is on the Lord's Resistance Army.  In coming days we will explore the Invisible Children and the organizational background, in a quest to sort fact from fiction.

Lord's Resistance Army
The Lord's Resistance Army is a militant group that formed 1987.  Initially the LRA was a outgrowth group out a larger resistance from by some of the Acholi people that waged war against  the Central Uganda Government.  Under the leadership of Joseph Kony.  The army is so named because Kony claimed to be a spokesman of God and as sign of his lordship he often marched his in a cross formation.

The group is know for is widespread violation of human rights including murder, child adduction, mutilation and enforcing children to serve as soldiers (Wikipedia.) Kony himself claims to be a spokesman of God. Inessential the group is primary a religious organisation that combined "Christian" and "Mystic" beliefs together. They have gained a reputation for waging campaigns against several countries including Northern and Central Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sudan.

Between 1986 and 2006 it is estimated that between 30,000 and 66,000 children have been adductive, tortured, raped, murdered and trained as soldiers.  In 2006 Joseph Kony arrest was ordered by the International Crimes Court, but has managed to escape capture on several occasions.  Wikipedia
LRA'S Movements
By 1988 the LRA had become a major player in Uganda's affairs and together with the Northern Uganda People's Army under the leadership of Odong Latek was pursarded to return to using traditional military tracts, rather than those reliant on the groups religious cult participates. The LRA was then significantly waken in the Northern campaign. There numbers were said to be reduced from thousands to hundreds.
When abducting children Kony's army would kill their families and neighbours given the children little option but to become soldiers in order to survive. In the mid 1990's the LRA again restrengthen to become involved in the conflict in Sudan, However when Sudan withdrew its support for the LRA the ICC issued a warrant for Joseph Kony's arrest in 2005.  The LRA was official listed as a terrorist group after September 11 by the US government  (Wikipedia)
It is now estimated the LRA has a few hundred hard cord members left. Mostly like hiding out in South Sudan. Where he continues to wage some type of private war. ABC News Melbourne
In 2008 under the Brush administration 17 army advisor were assigned to the Uganda government including intelligence officers but Kony managed to avoid arrest. In May 2010 delivered a request to asking for more funding to disarm the LRA and its Leader Jospeh Kony and in November 2011 the Obermba administration deployed 100 combat troops to Central Africa with the specific goal to disarm Kony and other senior members of the LRA.
Joseph Kony is currently wanted in the International Crimes Court on 33 charges and yet he continues to avoid capture one of the reasons he is free to move across boarders of four neighbouring countries without questioning.  These governments are still rebuilding after decades of civil war.  Distrust amongest the four countries is still high.

In the 1990's when the Ugandan Army crossed over the Southern Sudan boarder to go after Kony there own troops were accused murder, child abduction and rape. (Kings of War)  This total mistrust of each other makes appointing one country to go after Kony impossible,  In terms of Africa's political insatiability many issues need to explored, before a logistical logical campaign and be launch.    Impact Internet News

Please consider your response!

A few days ago we posted a link to a u-tub clip produced by The Invisible Children Organization and it has cernianly got the 'world talking'.  It world be hard to find a person who now hasn't scene the face of Joseph Kony.  So who is he and why has his name set the world talking?  The basic facts (without any sensualization) are on your left.

The video clip which we shared earlier this week presented a very "simplified" version of a very complex situation that has span decades.  We want to say we at It Take One: to change the world. Do not endorse the video.  But if you as individuals want to support the KONY 2012 campaign we encourage you to do so.

KONY 2012 - The positives

  1. Joseph Kony face is known world wide.
  2. We know the incredible power of the social media to promote causes.
  3. The debate - People around the world have been engaged in discussion.  There is world wide agreement on the need to bring Kony to justice.
  4. Regardless of what our individual thoughts are on Invisible Children, there message and stargraties  they are doing something. In recent days we have seen much criticism of the group and how they spend their money. The organization has responded to these claims on their website. We want to encourage you to read this response and draw your own conclusions.
  5. I personal think we can draw many positives from KONY 2012 movement regardless of our individual stance at least this group is passionately following there convictions.  I said on my personal blog "The greatest obstacle to world change, is to do nothing for fear of doing the wrong thing". My greatest fear is in two weeks time apart from recruits to the movement the world will stop talking about Joseph Knoy and his capture returns to the too hard basket.  It is my earnest desire that the world and key world figures continue to engage in the debate and seek the capture of Joseph Kony.

KONY 2012 - The negative

  1. The video produced by The Invisible Children Organization paints a simplistic view of a complex situation that has spanned decades.
  2. The use of a four year old child, suggest the answers to find Kony as so simple they are child's play.
  3. The video criticizes Kony for his manipulation of Children by manipulating children to tell their story.
  4. My greatest concern is if Invisible Children can mobilize millions around the world for good intentions. What potential does social media have if it is used for evil.  Millions of us jumped on board before we stopped to ask needed questions.  What if this group asked us to act tomorrow and not on 20th April, 2012.  What if we could be mobilized by group historicism before crucial questions were asked.  Remember at It takes one, we also want to learn from the mistakes of the past, in a error when its easy to click before we think what are the warning signs here.  At It Takes One we what you to use an analytical approach to world change - not jump on every causes band wagon.
  5. Many other criticisms have been discussed in recent days, we encourage you to visit websites and blogs to explore these including  Invisible Children Website and  my personal blog .
We apologize for so quickly jumping on the band wagon and posting the video on the blog.  We encourage you to keep the debate and Kony name in the media.  But as to how you chose to do that all we ask is you make a decision with your head rather than your heart.  Remember KONY 2012 blanket the world red night is April 20 2012. Its your choice!

Thank you
Debbie
Director

We do not endorse use of graffiti or excessive use of  posters.  If you put posters up please remove them in a week or two and keep Australia beautiful. Thanks
