The Year Ahead
Well, my fellow travellers in my quest to make this world a better place, 2011 is fast growing to close, The question is are you ready for 2012? You have a choice as to where you going to make it count as one of the best years of you life life or not. This isn't about positive thinking, this is about choosing to made a positive approach to 2012! Let me illustrate. . .
I personally can chose reflect on 2011 as a pretty average, my city was brought to its knees by floods with a major health struggle and family upheavals or reflect on a truly amazing year where I have come together with a bunch of liked minded people, made a whole bunch of new friends. In terms of work, I never dreamed, I write a paper on social network working or send it to a international conference, as for having my blog "Debbie's Discussion" to presented to the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (I have to keep checking the email), poetry accepted for publication, and writing groups. I wonder how I managed to pack it all in. What an awesome year 2011 has been for me! I don't need to let my circumstances dedicated how I evaluate my year. Do you know what I mean?
Anyway if you want to plan your "Year of awesomeness" here's a link Annual Review .

Stop and Think!
What do you use clean water for?
Could you survive 24 hours on only bottled water?
If we cut all water supply how would you cope!
For thousands around the world this is still a reality everyday,
many do not have access to even clean drinking water,
Women and young girls are often raped on root to
collecting water that they no is contaminated.
I say water is Life!
and
Access to clean water is a human right,
Please watch this video and pass it on!

Did you know?
In the U.S
21st January 2012
National Hug Day!
What is the value of a National Hug Day!
"We have got more than our quota of whiners
and far too few hugs these days. Most of us have a
little person inside who meeds human contact,
in this stainless steel, computerised society,
where everybody is keep at arms length.
Consider hugging as non-sexual (sign of affection)
like a hand-shake or high-five. Such personal contact
makes you feel good. A good hug warms relationship
between people. That's what National Hugging Day is all about"
Chris Thompson, Saginaw News (MI) News Colonist!
Our suggestion
we recommend you substitute hugs for hand-shakes on 21st January
and always ask first before hugging someone!
and always ask first before hugging someone!

OK! You're gonna need to know what a "hug" involves. We're using the Wikipedia definition, but if your attempting any world records you need to check with the Guinness People for there rules. A hug is a form of physical intimacy, that involves closing or holding the arms around the neck, back, or waist of another person. If involving more than two people this is referred to as a group hug.
Please leave a comment if you think you've got what it takes!

February 2012
Are you up for another challenge? We at It Takes One: To Change the World are declaring February - Share The Love Month. Share The Love works on the same principles as Random Acts of Kindness and the Pay It Forward principles. We are not looking for our R.A.O.K. to be returned, if anyone asks to be able to repay you, simply ask them to Share The Love with someone else!
Why February? February is the shortest month of the year, this year, being a leap year (so you actually have 366 days to perform R.A.O.K. in 2012) there are 29 opportunities to show love to others. February 14 th is also Valitines Day, so we should have an appropriate challenge on the 14th February.
Meet Nick Vujicic from Life Without Limbs. Nick currently holds the world record for the most consecutive hugs in 24 hours. Other attempts include: Guinness World Records - 'Hug It Out!' ;Most Hugs in 24hr Aspen Nick's love for life and others is infectious. He loves hugs more than anyone I know and he isn't afraid to ask others, regardless of who they are for a huge. I recently read a quote, "A hug is like a boomerang, you can return it straight away and no body minds!"
Nick's Challenge To Share Hugs! |
Nick was born with no arms and no legs, despite his disability and limitations he travels the world and challenges others to life life without limits. If you need some inspiration to Share The Love this February then check out Nick's website. So circle the 14th February and mark it Hug Day 2011! I am hoping to organise a hug-a-thone of some description.
If you are interested in hosting a Share The Love - Hug Day Event in your city, please email me to register your event. You can do anything you like as long as it involves hugs! You may like to combine your event as a fundraiser for a charity (Nicks, Life Without Limbs would make an ideal charity to raise money for on our Share The Love - Hug Day 2011!) or have a go a a world record attempt. Even better get the media involved. If you have a suggestion for and event post if on our Facebook page.
During February I like to start a Share The Love Facebook page and see how many likes we can get in one month. Spreading the Love through our social next works. I will set up an events page on our It Takes One Facebook page. If everyone is able to use our Share The Love logo as their Facebook profile photo then our message should spread quite quickly.
Keep an eye on our events page for further details.

The Forgotten Ones - International Card Exchange
"I shall pass through this world once.
Any good therefore that I can do
or any kindness that I can show
to any human being, let me do it now.
Do not let me defer or neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again."
~ Mahatma Ghandi ~
We like to think our children will care for us in our old age, but no all of us are survived by our children and not all of us are able to have Children. There are people being card for in nursing homes that have no family, receive no visitors, and no Christmas Cards fill there rooms this Holiday Season.
The forgotten Ones International card exchange seeks to change all that. If everyone seek to write to one Forgotten One then no body will ever be forgotten. It doesn't take long to write an extra Christmas card or drop in a bunch of flowers to a local nursing home. To bright up a residents room. No body deserves to be forgotten. You can visit The Forgotten Ones - International Card Exchange Facebook page for address of nursing home world wide, Some of your time is a gift money can't buy.
Will you be forgotten?

Spreading The Christmas Spirit
Free Christmas Lunch On
The Gold Coast
Queensland, Australia
Random Acts Of Christmas Kindness Presents . . .
I want to share this with all of Santas Gold Coast helpers... it is from my friend Graham Long from the Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross, Sydney. That is where I volunteered on Christmas Day with my family for many years...
One of the kids said casually, "Mum told me that I was the mistake of her life". In a tone that belonged to a discussion of the weather, one after another of these kids echoed, "Yeah, my mum told me that I was the biggest mistake of her life too". One girl said, "My mum would rather take drugs and prostitute herself than be my mother. I was placed in care at 6 years old and I remember it clearly. I was in foster care until I was 11 and then I ran away and ever since I've been looking after myself on the streets."
It's not just our young people who yearn for the family they never had. A woman in her late fifties said to me this week, "I want my mum" and it came from such a deep place that she shook while saying the words. She'd never known her mother. A fellow in his forties said, sometimes yelling and sometimes sobbing, "I'd do anything to have either my mum or my dad say, 'well done, I'm proud of you'" A man told me this week that his father preferred to gratify himself in him, a kid and his son, rather than with his wife. This is almost too difficult to write. It's been a week where joy and sadness has been poured out together.
A beautiful man who was volunteering with us yesterday was sharing some of his story. The conversation covered long, merciless abuse as a child with stories of sick anger that was cultivated by a sick father and uncles. To hear this was a violation through my ears. Yet the man is doing well. He is an inspiration to any who have eyes to see and he spends all of his spare time helping us at Wayside. He talked of many sessions with psychiatrists and psychologists and how they all recommend significant medication. I asked him how was it that he is doing so well and making such a good contribution to life. His face beamed and in his heavy accent he said, "No psychologist that I've met seems to know that while my past plays a part in who I am, it is my future that is most formative." I wanted to embrace him and dance around the table where he was working.
So, my Gold Coast friends...when people ask why we do this stuff -I think of these people and wonder how could I not?
